Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPS)
In the UK the Health and Safety Executives’ Approved Codes of Practice give practical advice on how to comply with UK health and safety law. These Codes are important in that they have a special legal status. If you are prosecuted for a breach of health and safety law, and it is proved that you did not follow the relevant provisions of the Code, you would need to demonstrate that you have complied with the law in some other way or a Court would find you at fault.
Following the guidance in the ACOP’s is not compulsory and organisations are free to take other action. However, if you do follow the guidance you would normally be doing enough to comply with the law.

Are the means in which European legislation is incorporated into UK Law, The EU will issue a Statutory Instrument, and this will be incorporated into the HSWA 1974 and all relevant regulations.
